• Les « abstracts ». — La préoccupation, de plus en plus grande, d'aller au delà de la simple connaissance des titres et de séparer le bon grain de l'ivraie a donné naissance, au début du XXe siècle, à un nouveau type de documentation bibliographique : les recueils d'analyses ou, comme on dit en pays anglo-saxon, d'abstracts. Créés d'abord pour la médecine, la chimie et d'autres domaines des sciences exactes et appliquées, les recueils d'abstracts ont été accueillis avec faveur : leur utilité s'est accrue à mesure que le volume de la production augmentait et rendait de plus en plus difficile la prospection directe des sources.

Étymol. ET HIST. — XXe s. terme de docum. Empr. à l'angl. abstract attesté au sens de « résumé » dep. 1528 (GARDINER ds POCOCK, Rec. of Ref., I, 1, 117 ds NED :We send herein enclosed, abstracts of such letters as hath been sent to the pope's holiness); cf. 1927 ibid. suppl. s.v. abstractor (BALBI, Deafness Expl. title -p. : Appointed by the Institution of Electrical Engineers as Abstractor to science Abstracts in Electro Acoustics). Le mot est apparu une fois comme adj. et comme subst. empl. dans la lang. de la philos. (Cf. abstrait, hist.).
